# Projects, subprojects, and phases

Projects are used when you want to register time, absence, or costs for specific projects. You can create and maintain projects, subprojects and phases under Admin - Dimensions - Project.

## Where do you create projects?

You can create and maintain projects here:

**Admin - Dimensions - Project**

To create a new project, click the **plus icon** in the upper-left corner.

If the project should only be available for a specific period, enter a start date and an end date. If the project has no defined end date, you can leave these fields blank.

## HMSReg number for a project

If you use the **HMSReg** integration, enter the project’s HMSReg number.

This is used to link the project correctly to HMSReg.

## Subprojects

If the project should have subprojects, select **Uses subprojects** on the project.

A subproject is created for a specific project and is only available for that project.

## Phases

If a subproject should have phases, select **Uses phases** on the subproject.

A phase is created for a specific subproject and is only available for that project and subproject.

## How projects, subprojects, and phases are connected

The structure is:

**Project > Subproject > Phase**

This means that:

-   a project can have subprojects
-   a subproject can have phases
-   a subproject is linked to one specific project
-   a phase is linked to one specific subproject

## Alphanumeric numbers

Alphanumeric numbers can be enabled for:

-   projects
-   subprojects
-   phases

An alphanumeric number can contain both letters and numbers.
